Volunteer Opportunities

Marstons Mills Public Library is always looking for volunteers, and we have opportunities that will fit the level of involvement that best suits you - from stuffing envelopes for our periodic mailings to membership on our Development Committee!

Below is a list of volunteer positions that we would like to have filled, but if they don't seem to be entirely suited to you, don't worry! Just pop by the Library or give us a call, and we can create an opportunity that fits your needs. Thanks for your help...

HIGH-TO-MEDIUM LEVEL TIME COMMITMENT, YEAR-ROUND OR SEASONAL

Board of Trustees member: overseeing Library operations; negotiating annual budget and changes in services and policies.
Schedule: 1 meeting a month (approx. 2 hours); periodic year-round budget and changes in services and policies assistance in programming and at fundraising events.

Development Committee member: planning and facilitating fundraising events, appeals and campaigns.
Schedule: 1-2 meetings a month (approx. 1 hour); year-round event organization and staffing.

Friends of MMPL Group officer*: coordinating independent activities and events to raise community awareness of the Library as well as operating funds: assisting Development Committee with larger fundraising events.
Schedule: 1 meeting a month; periodic year-round assistance at fundraising events.

Circulation volunteer (adult or junior): shelf reading; reshelving books; checking books in and out (adults only); preparing books for delivery (adults only).
Schedule: 1-3 hours a week, year-round or seasonally.

Physical labor volunteer: assisting with the maintenance tasks around MMPL.
Schedule: as needed.

Shelving volunteer (adult or junior): shelf reading; putting away books.
Schedule: 1-3 hours per week.

Tech services volunteer: creating and applying call number labels; covering books.
Schedule: 1-3 hours per week.

Recycling volunteer: breaking down cardboard boxes; consolidating newspapers, white paper, magazines, bottles and cans and placing them in the outdoor recycling container.
Schedule: 45 minutes every two weeks.

MEDIUM LEVEL TIME COMMITMENT, YEAR-ROUND, SEASONAL OR OCCASIONAL

Junior Summer Reading Program volunteer: checking participants' reading logs, handing out progress stickers, raffle entries, prizes and certificates.
Schedule: 1-3 hours per week during July and August.

Physical labor volunteer: weeding MMPL's front garden and planting annuals and door pots.
Schedule: weeding: 1 hour every week (May-Oct) or as available; planting: 3 times (May-Oct) or as available.

Program volunteer (adult or junior): assisting with supervision at adult and/or children's events.
Schedule: 2 hours as needed.

Program performance volunteer: conducting an adult or a children's program for the Library.
Schedule: 4 hours (prep time included), as often as desired.

Refreshments volunteer: baking treats for MMPL events.
Schedule: 8 events per year or per event.

Book sale volunteer: sorting through boxes and bags of books to prepare for book sale.
Schedule: 3-4 hours per week, 6 weeks per year (bi-monthly sales).

Book sale volunteer: manning the cash box during book sales.
Schedule: 2-4 hours, 6 times a year (or per sale).

Book sale volunteer: packing books up after the book sale.
Schedule: 1-2 hours per week, 6 weeks per year (or per sale).

Mailings volunteer: stuffing, labeling and counting Annual Appeal envelopes.
Schedule: 5-6 hours, 4 times per year (or per mailing).

Filing volunteer: sorting through accumulated office files and archiving them in the basement.
Schedule: 2-3 hours, 4 times per year.

Events volunteer: providing a service or a product for our annual Welcome Spring silent auction.
Schedule: once a year in late April (time commitment will vary with nature of donation).

LOW LEVEL TIME COMMITMENT, YEAR-ROUND, SEASONAL OR OCCASIONAL

Physical labor volunteer: watering the garden.
Schedule: 15-25 minutes, 3-4 times per week, as many weeks as desired (May-Nov.)

Mailings volunteer: counting and sorting newsletters.
Schedule: 2-3 hours, 4 times per year (or per mailing).

Mailings volunteer: counting and labeling invitations and other mailings.
Schedule: 2-3 hours, 4 times per year (or per mailing).

Web site volunteer: checking links on MMPL web site.
Schedule: 3-4 hours, twice a year.

Events volunteer: creating a holiday craft for our December craft table.
Schedule: once a year in late Nov./early Dec.

Audiovisual Maintenance volunteer: cleaning CDs and DVDs and checking to see if they play properly.
Schedule: as needed.
